Learn to Race Teams & Race Teams

The KYC Race Programs include Learn to Race, and Race Team. Regatta schedules for each team will vary from year to year but will be based on the Ontario Sailing Grand Prix Development Series (GPDS). Starting in 2017 and continuing this year, KYC will be hosting variety of guest coaches to provide on-water instruction alongside team coaches. Some of our past coaches include national coaches, world champions, and Olympians such as Robert Davis, Dannie Boyd, Chris Cook, John Curtis, Chris Cowan and Bernard Luttmer.


CANSail 3 Opti Learn-to-Race (Opti LTR)

Our Single-handed CANSail 3 Learn-to-Race (LTR) program will continue to build on sailor’s single-handed sailing skills through more advanced and more technical sailing lessons and drills. This program also includes introductory racing concepts and skills.
The Opti LTR sailors will have opportunities to learn and practice with the Opti Race Team. The Opti LTR Team will participate in the KYC run “Bronze Regatta”, giving the sailors their first racing experience. The team also has the option of participating in away regattas at their coach's discretion. The regattas the sailors travel to will be determined by the coach with input from parents. KYC follows Sail Canada's CANSail 3 standard.

Time: Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 4:00pm

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of CANSail 2
  • Ages: 10 - 14 years old
  • Weight: less than 110 lbs (older / heavier sailors can participate in the C420 CANSail program).
  • PFD / life jacket is required to be worn while in, on, and around the water. No exceptions.
Notes:
  • Some sailors may need more than 2 weeks of coaching and instruction before they can progress to CANSail 4.

CANSail 4 Opti Race

Our Single-handed CANSail 4 Race Team program will continue to build on sailor’s single-handed sailing skills through skill-specific and boat handling techniques. More advanced racing concepts and tactics will be taught to sailors. The sailors will also be introduced to fitness and nutrition for athletes.

The Opti Race Team will participate in the KYC run “Bronze Regatta” and will travel to regattas throughout Ontario. The regattas the sailors travel will be determined by the coach with input from parents. The coach will meet with parents at the beginning of the season to discuss regatta schedule and parent chaperones for regattas. KYC follows Sail Canada's CANSail 4 standard.

Program Length: 4 weeks
Time:Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 4:00pm
Cost: $ 2,190.00
Please note regatta registration fees are paid separately to the host organizations; class association fees required for regatta participation are paid separately to the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association . Race team gear will be available at an additional cost.
Boat:  Opti sailors joining the race team are highly encouraged to participate with their own boat. If you need to charter a boat please contact the club directly for pricing and availability.

Requirements:

  • Successful completion of CANSail 3
  • Ages: 10 - 14 years old, based on Canadian Optimist DInghy Association.
  • Weight: Maximum weight of 115 lbs, based on Canadian Optimist DInghy Association.
  • PFD / life jacket is required to be worn while in, on, and around the water. No exceptions.

  • Some sailors may need more than 4 weeks of coaching and instruction before they can progress to CANSail 5.

CANSail 5 Double-handed, Learn-to-Race

CANSail5 sailors will learn more advanced sail theory, racing concepts, and racing tactics. Sailing skills and techniques will be refined for C420 sailboats. KYC follows Sail Canada's CANSail5 standard. Sailors in this program are expected to participate in local regattas, away regattas, and local sailing clinics. Sailors who wish to achieve their CANSail5 are encouraged to participate in spring training and continue training in the fall to maximize their skill retention.

Time:Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 4:00pm

Requirements:

  • Ages: 14 - 17 years old
  • Successful completion of CANSail4
  • PFD / life jacket is required to be worn while in, on, and around the water. No exceptions.
Notes:
  • A minimum of 8 consecutive weeks is required for CANSail5.
  • Some sailors may need more than 8 weeks of coaching and instruction before they can progress to CANSail6.

CANSail 6 Double-handed Race Team

CANSail 6 sailors will learn advanced sail theory and rigging theory and will be expected to apply these concepts in practice, daily. Sailors will practice advanced boat-handling drills to refine their skills. CANSail 6 sailors will learn advanced racing concepts and tactics, and will be expected to apply these concepts and tactics during regattas. KYC follows Sail Canada's CANSail 6 standard.

Sailors in this program will be expected to participate in local regattas, away from home regattas, and local sailing clinics. Sailors who wish to achieve their CANSail 6 are encouraged to participate in spring training and continue training in the fall to maximize their skill retention.

Visiting sailors

We are very excited to welcome out-of-town sailors to join our Race Program. We can even help find billets for your sailor. Visiting sailors, depending on coach availability may be able to join us for a shorter amount of time. Let us know if you would like to be a visiting sailor.

Membership Credit Book:
Full Family members will receive a credit book equal to 15% of paid program fees, which can be used for Food & Beverage, Regalia, and Gas Dock purchases. This replaces the previous membership discount.
