Race Teams

New to our race teams this year, our program will be hosting a variety of guest coaches. Every week, our sailors will benefit from the world-class coaching of past national coaches, world champions and olympians. These coaches will provide on-the-water instruction alongside the team coaches. Some of our confirmed coaches for 2017 include: Robert Davis , Dannie Boyd , Chris Cook , John Curtis , Chris Cowan, and Bernard Luttmer .

Opti Race Team

Has your sailor successfully completed at least one Learn to Race session (or equivalent) and is ready to prepare for a regatta away from home? The Opti Race team will begin racing by participating in several club races and at least one regatta away from home. The sessions for the race team are either four or six weeks. The July group should plan to participate in the Fruitbowl Regatta in Hudson Quebec. The August group will attend CORK International in Kingston. Sailors will be placed in the racing fleet most appropriate to their level at the start of the regatta.

Length of Program: 4 or 6 weeks
Time:  9am - 4pm

Program fees are listed below. Please note regatta registration fees are paid separately to the host organizations; class association fees required for regatta participation are paid separately to the Canadian Optimist Dinghy Association . Race team gear will be available at an additional cost.
Boat:  Opti *sailors joining the race team should BYOB (bring your own boat), if you need to charter the boat please contact the club directly for pricing and availability.
Level: CanSail 3 / 4 (see below)
Requirements: Successful completion of Opti Learn to Race including at least one club regatta and CanSail 3. Sailors are expected to have strong sailing skills, a desire to learn some basic racing skills and should be able to competently handle their Opti in winds over 15 knots. All applicants must be approved by the Head Instructor. The maximum recommended weight for this program is 115 pounds, otherwise entry into LEARN program is recommended. Sailors can participate on the Opti Race Team until they are 15 years old.
Notes: Opti sailors are likely to take part in the Opti race program for one or two sessions before joining the Intermediate / Advanced Double-Handed Sailing or Senior Race Teams. Sailors will be working on their level checklist but there is a strong likelihood that they will not achieve their level during a race program as the focus is on achieving race training and experience.

Learn to Race - Double Handed

Learn to Race sailors work on skills related to high-performance sailing and basic racing in preparation to join the Race Team. Due to the more advanced nature of this program, a four-week commitment is required. Sailors learn and practice these skills in varying wind conditions. Participation in club regattas is expected.

Length of Program:  4 weeks
Time:  9am-4pm
Cost: $ 1,270.00 ( $ 1,060.00 for KYC Family Members)
Boat: 420
Level: CanSail 5
Requirements:  Successful completion of the Advanced program including CanSail 4 achievement.
Notes:  Sailors are likely to take part in the LTR Program for two or more sessions before joining the Race Team or moving into an Instructor's program. Sailors will be working on their level checklist but there is no guarantee that they will achieve their level this year but they will gain experience and enjoy hours on the water.

420 Race Team

If your sailor has successfully completed the Learn to Race program (or equivalent), they may join the 420 Race Team. The RT, unlike the other double-handed programs, is a full 8-week commitment. This is a focused program on racing, which includes several out-of-town or at least away from KYC regattas including Fruitbowl Regatta in Hudson Quebec and CORK International in Kingston.

Length of Program:  8 weeks
Time:  9am - 4pm
Cost: $ 2,430.00 ( $ 2,025.00 for KYC Family Members)
*regatta registration fees are paid separately to the host organizations; class association fees required for regatta participation are paid separately to class association. Race team gear will be available at an additional cost.
Boat:  sailors joining the race team should BYOB (bring your own boat), if you need to charter the boat please contact the club directly for pricing and availability.

Laser / Radial Race Team

If your sailor has successfully completed the Learn to Race program (or equivalent) and is interested in single-handed racing, they may join the Laser and Laser Radial Race Team. The RT, unlike the other programs, is a full 8-week commitment. This is a focused program on racing, which includes several out-of-town or at least away from KYC regattas including Fruitbowl Regatta in Hudson Quebec and CORK International in Kingston.

Length of Program:  8 weeks
Time:  9am - 4pm
Cost: $ 2,350.00 ( $ 1,960.00 for KYC Family Members)
*regatta registration fees are paid separately to the host organizations; class association fees required for regatta participation are paid separately to class association. Race team gear will be available at an additional cost.
Boat: sailors joining the race team MUST BYOB (bring your own boat).
Level: CanSail 6 (see below)

If your sailor has successfully completed the Learn to Race program (or equivalent) and the 420 race program they may  be ready to join the 29er Race Team. The RT, unlike the other programs, is a full 8-week commitment. This is a focused program on racing, which includes several out-of-town or at least away from KYC regattas.

Length of Program: 8 weeks
Time:  9am - 4pm
Cost: $ 2,200.00 ( $ 2,200.00 for KYC Family Members)
