General Information

Our Mission: The Kingston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program exists to teach and promote water safety, the sport of sailing, and encourage skill development in a safe environment for young people in the Kingston community. The program emphasizes the enjoyment and lifetime benefit of active participation in sport.

What to Bring - The Essentials

  1. Personal Flotation Device (PFD), must be approved by the Canadian Coast Guard or the Department of Transportation. (Available at Canadian Tire, Marine Outfitters, etc.)
  2. Proper Clothing, sailors should bring a swimsuit, a hat, splash jacket & lots of warm and extra clothing.
  3. Waterproof Sunscreen, the sun is stronger than ever while on the water, sunscreen should be applied at least twice a day.

Rules

The goal of junior sailing is to have fun while improving sailing skills!

  1. Hours are from 9:00 to 4:00 Monday to Friday. Please be on time. If you are going to be absent, phone us at 613-547-2620 or bring a note the day before.
  2. You must wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) on at all times, while in a boat, on a dock or while swimming.
  3. Shoes must be worn at all times! Sandal (e.g. Tevas, Flops, Reefs) are fine for land but closed-toe shoes (water shoes or old running shoes) must be worn while sailing to protect your toes.
  4. Sail away from the dock only after your instructor says it is okay to do so.
  5. Take care in the use of all equipment and boats. Long hours have been spent getting them ready for summer. If damage does occur report it to an instructor so it can be fixed.
  6. Don't run on the docks. It is too easy to trip on lines or slip on the wet surface
  7. The Club House is out of bounds during camp hours unless with an instructor.
  8. Swimming is only allowed as a group with your instructor.
  9. Lunch takes place in the park every day.
    • Bring a Nut-free Lunch.
    • Do not leave the park without your instructors' knowledge.
    • After you eat lunch place the garbage in the trash can.
    • Don't pollute the park for others.
  10. Treat others with the same respect that you would expect to be treated.
  11. Language and behaviors that are unacceptable at home are unacceptable here. Swearing, bullying and throwing anything that is not a ball will not be tolerated.
  12. Kingston Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is a smoke, non-prescribed drug and alcohol free environment. Possession or use of these substances will result in serious consequences and be grounds for immediate expulsion from the KYC Junior Sailing Program
